Hoping for a green thumb

I’ve never particularly paid attention to, or cared for, yard work. Why would I? The total bonus of apartment living is that the outside maintenance is somebody else’s problem.

And considering that the outside of the house is “Justin’s area”, I figured that mentality would be the same when we moved into our home.

That is until I had to fork up to replace one of the two trees that died in our front yard.

Which, if you’ve never had to buy trees, let me break it to you now – being “green” is expensive. I’m starting to think my granddad had the right idea when he replaced his yard with rocks and would pour gasoline on anything that dared to grow. (That’s how people roll in west Texas.)

And aside from the price, there’s the labor.

Ok.

I didn’t help. I made Justin do it. That is his “area” after all.

But it looked exhausting. In fact, it took me a few beers to get over it…

Five hours and several long-necks later and we have ourselves a tree!
Isn’t she a beaut? Well, in a few months she better be or I’m hiring someone to do this – I can’t bear to sit back in a lawn chair for another five hours while I watch Justin toil away…
So here’s hoping that we have the magic touch for a beautiful tree come Spring and enough energy (and liver capacity) to replace the other of the two dead trees.
